The Rooster and his Pearls.
Today's animal is a play on one of Aesop's fables about the rooster and the pearl.
A rooster of a different persuasion. See here for a translation of the fable:

and this is Scott Harrison's (the carousel's creator) explanation
for the Rooster and his pearls, which he posted on a plaque inside the carousel:
The Rooster, the Cow, and You
Rooster has a pearl necklace.
I thought to give him this after reading an Aesop fable that described a rooster finding a pearl
next to a single piece of barley-corn.
Finding the pearl useless to him
and the corn being something to eat,
he did just that, leaving the pearl to lie in the dust.
The moral to that story:
precious things are only for those who can prize them.
I didn’t much like that moral so I gave our rooster
a complete pearl necklace to wear as he likes.
Directly across the carousel from Rooster is Cow,
who has horns. Many cows, like this Texas Longhorn,
have horns but the horns are often cut off when they are young.
Cow also has a bell to ring in the New Year every day.
